Well known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, this region also includes a lot of mining with Queensland’s prime coking coal reserves and the highest-grade metallurgical coal in the world.
The region also boasts a strong agribusiness sector and is one of the nation’s largest sugar and bio commodity producers. The expanding construction and development industry is underpinned by world class port facilities, rail and air infrastructure.
As one of the first QWRAP regions, the Whitsunday Isaac Mackay Water Alliance has arguably the most ambitious raft of projects. State Government funding has been secured to support a wide range of priority initiatives for the region including collaborative research projects, an extension of the Water Industry Worker program with a dedicated Learning and Development Coordinator to coordinate training across all alliances, alignment of waste management approaches, SCADA systems, annualised salary packages, smart metering and more.
