The Whitsunday Isaac Mackay Water Alliance (WIMWA) has officially launched the Smart Meter Playbook, a comprehensive best-practice guide designed to support the Alliance and the wider water industry in advancing smart water metering initiatives.
The Playbook was unveiled at the WIMWA Annual Forum by BetterAIM’s Technical Director – Water Advisory, Cameron Jessup, alongside WIMWA Project Lead Andrea Thayer from Mackay Regional Council. This milestone reflects months of collaboration between WIMWA members, BetterAIM, and industry stakeholders.

What is the Smart Meter Playbook?
The Smart Meter Playbook, supported by $33,300 in QWRAP funding, showcases the value of the QWRAP program in driving innovation and sustainability across regional water service providers. It’s about giving our industry the confidence to embrace smarter water solutions that protect resources for generations to come.
Developed as a practical resource, the Playbook captures key learnings from WIMWA’s smart water meter program and provides guidance on:
- Best practice processes aligned with ISO55001 and IPWEA standards.
- Customer engagement strategies and metering policies.
- Technical standards, compliance, and risk management.
- Lifecycle planning, procurement, and future-proofing.
- Data governance, analytics, and technology integration.
The framework includes detailed process models, FAQs, and configurable templates to help organisations implement smart metering effectively and sustainably.
Why it matters
Water is our most precious resource. Smart metering principles enable utilities to:
- Connect with customers through transparent communication.
- Share a common purpose in water conservation.
- Manage water sustainably for future generations.
