The Far North Queensland Water Alliance (FNQWA) Regional Water Capability Project has reached a significant milestone, with the Regional Water Capability Plan formally adopted by the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC).
Delivered through the FNQWA with support from the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers and Jobs Queensland, the project represents a major step forward in strengthening water and wastewater service delivery across the region.
Developed in close collaboration with member councils, the Plan provides a clear, practical roadmap to address capability challenges and support improved service outcomes. It identifies key gaps across the water and wastewater sector and sets out a series of scalable, achievable initiatives that councils can implement over the short, medium and long term.
Far North Queensland’s water services operate in a complex environment. Geographic diversity, ageing infrastructure, population growth and increasing regulatory and customer expectations are placing growing pressure on councils to deliver safe, reliable and efficient services. The Regional Water Capability Plan responds directly to these challenges by providing a coordinated, regionally aligned approach to capability uplift.
A central theme of the Plan is the importance of regional collaboration. By working together – sharing data, aligning systems and processes, and leveraging collective expertise – FNQROC member councils can build stronger, more resilient services while maximising the value of investment across the region.
The Plan outlines eleven strategic initiatives to guide this work, spanning areas such as standardisation of systems and processes, enhanced data sharing, improved asset management and risk-based decision-making, stronger workforce development, and more effective advocacy for funding and policy reform.
Endorsement by FNQROC signals a shared commitment across the region to move from planning to action. It provides a strong foundation for councils to work collectively to uplift capability, strengthen service delivery, and deliver long-term benefits to their communities.
With the Plan now in place, the focus shifts to implementation. FNQWA will continue to support councils and regional partners as these initiatives are progressed, helping to build a more capable, connected and sustainable water sector in Far North Queensland.
This milestone highlights the value of regional partnerships in tackling shared challenges and delivering practical, transformative outcomes for Queensland communities.
